A Brief History of Bramford Road Methodist Church

Methodism was first established in our area of Ipswich with the opening of Pitcairn Road Mission Hall in 1886. The Congregation soon outgrew this building and a new larger church was built on the current site in Bramford Road, opening in 1903. The original hall closed in 1903 and the site is now residential.

The new building must have been an impressive sight in 1900’s Bramford Road and it remains a dominant feature to this day, with its extensive roof, gable window, and pinnacle reaching to the heavens like a cathedral spire. Foundation stones recording the names of benefactors can be seen around the front entrance.

An unusual feature, the outdoor pulpit, overlooks the side garden. Although no longer in use, it is easy to imagine the early ministers preaching God’s word to the outdoor congregation.

Between 1997 and 2003 the building was modernised and extended to meet the needs of our community in the 21st century. The new Community Building was officially opened by Mayor Penny Breakwell on 22nd November 2003.
